ALicensed Veterinary Technician Candidates

We offer preceptorships to assist students in the various Veterinary Technician Programs in the area by providing the clinical experience required for their professional development. A preceptorship can be arranged at any of the four companion animal clinics or with the Road Service. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Candidates

We offer externships in three areas: Dairy Production, Companion Animal, and Mixed. Each program is tailored to meet the academic and professional requirements of the individual student. Interested applicants may contact Tracy Smith at tsmith@perryvet.com or (585) 969-9117.

Externships

Perry Vet offers opportunities for externships in dairy production medicine throughout the year. Externships are tailored to meet the interests and needs of the individual student’s academic program and ability level.
A Perry Vet partner will be assigned as a primary mentor for the dairy production medicine extern. The mentor will work with the student to design an experience that meets the needs of the student. Students will have exposure to all aspects of practice life including veterinary activities, case studies, producer meetings, billing, inventory management, and customer relations. Depending on the duration of the externship, special projects or research initiatives may be arranged.

Dairy Production Medicine Externship

Objectives of the externship include:

  • Routine Dairy Herd Health (H3, OTHER SECTIONS)
  • achieve a basic proficiency in rectal palpation
  • introduction to ultrasound imaging
  • assist / perform basic surgical procedures
  • (DA surgery, C-section)
  • assist with and perform basic obstetrical procedures
  • sick cow diagnosis and generation of treatment plans
  • embryo transfer

Production Medicine

  • treatment protocol design and implementation
  • nutrition work (including ration balancing and troubleshooting)
  • milking system evaluation (milking equipment and milking procedure evaluation)
  • facility design
  • production, reproductive, and disease incidence benchmarking
  • computer records analysis (primarily DC 305)
  • Bi-weekly computer records assignments will be available to increase students practical aptitude with on-farm computer software programs
  • Weekly rounds will be conducted to address important and timely concepts. Food and beverage will be provided during rounds.

Perry Vet provides housing and professional liability insurance through the AVMA PLIT Student Program.
When not pursuing academic/professional development, the area includes numerous year round attractions and is within easy commuting distance of Buffalo, Rochester and Toronto.

Companion Animal Medicine Externship

A Perry Vet partner will be assigned as a primary mentor for the Companion Animal Medicine externship. The mentor will work with the student to design an experience that meets the needs of the student. Students will have exposure to all aspects of practice life including veterinary activities, case studies, billing, and customer relations. Depending on the duration of the externship, special projects or research initiatives may be arranged. The practice provides housing, and professional liability insurance through the AVMA PLIT Student Program.

Medical Cases

  • medical work up and development of treatment plans
  • daily rounding
  • in house lab work

Surgical Cases

  • TPR
  • patient prep
  • catheter placement
  • calculate drug & fluid doses
  • set up and perform imaging exams
  • set up monitoring equipment
  • surgical closures
  • endoscopic procedures

Wellness examinations

  • history and physical
  • discuss preventive care options with owners
  • respond to owners’ questions and concerns

Dental Cases

  • participate in dental cleaning
  • assist with extractions
  • dental radiology

Emergency Care

  • assist with trauma cases
  • work evening or weekend call cases

Mixed Medicine Externship

DA Perry Vet partner will be assigned as a primary mentor for the Mixed Medicine externship. The mentor will work with the student to design an experience that meets the needs of the student. Students will have exposure to all aspects of practice life including veterinary activities, case studies, producer meetings, billing, inventory management, and customer relations. Depending on the duration of the externship, special projects or research initiatives may be arranged. The practice provides housing, and professional liability insurance through the AVMA PLIT Student Program.
Students interested in a mixed medicine externship at Perry Vet should review the clinical areas available under the Dairy Production Medicine and Companion Animal Medicine extern programs. Based on the clinical areas of interest, a curriculum will be developed with the Perry Vet mentor.
